Afternoon tea
The theme for today's postgrad afternoon tea is "healthy". On the menu is:
- orange juice
- Fanta (the label says it has orange in it therefore it must be good for you)
- cherries (of the Cadbury Ripe variety)
- strawberries (of the Allens variety with cream conveniently attached)
- and an orange (from the always-in-season Terry's Chocolate family of
oranges).
And for those who don't like "healthy", Tim Tams are making yet another
appearance at postgrad afternoon tea.

The outright winner was Lars Yencken, who managed to fight off some aggresive
block voting from the Grids group.
The list of posters that received more than one vote were: amy, anthony,
cdong, caedwa, edwardi, gavinb, htsai, jiayu, lljy, marcosd, bhuiyanm, mumer,
naron, nthio, jingy, rshelton, rfk, narayans, srikumar.
If you enjoyed the Poster Afternoon and would like to see it happen again,
please let James Bailey or the CSSEPG committee know. Some students have
suggested we run a colloquium - we've set up a wiki page
for a discussion.

Choose the Red Pill
This Wednesday (the 9th of June) the CSSEPG are taking over ICT Theatre 3 from
5:15pm for the first ever CSSEPG MOVIE SCREENING!!! We are currently tracking
down DVDs such as Matrix (choose the red pill), Donnie Darko (why are you
wearing that stupid bunny suit), and Finding Nemo (mate), but we need your
help. "What can I do," I hear you ask...
...well, email cssepg and let us know what film you would like to
see. The final choice will be made democratically on Wednesday night.
Finally, even if you are not seeing the film, there will be the possibility of
heading out for a cheap dinner somewhere in the area. So if you are interested
in this one then rock up to ICT Theatre 3 sometime around 7pm.
ps. Apologies to coursework postgrads who are probably still heavily into study
mode. The CSSEPG are scheming for some end of semester excuse to drink beer and
recover.

anything else you would like to suggest to cssepg address will be provided
(This claim is impossible, but suggestions will be approximated). So take an
hour off work this Friday and come and support the social aspect of being a
postgraduate within CSSE.

continuing most Monday's 1:30-2:30pm in ICT Room 5.08 (the Dept's
boardroom - so we have to be very clean!). The afternoon tea's are

biscuits, etc.). This Monday we're eating pizza to celebrate the end of

AUSCC03 Call for Tutorial Proposals.
A number of undergraduates from the Dept's of CSSE and IS are organising
the inaugural Australian Undergraduate Students' Computing Conference to
be held here at Melbourne Uni, September 24-26. Although paper
submissions are open only to undergraduates and honours students,
postgraduates at Australian universities are invited to submit tutorial
proposals. Typical conference-style proposals and full slide-sets
are due June 7th and July 7th respectively, and should be targetted at
an undergraduate level. This is a unique opportunity for us, particularly
those planning on following a career in academia/research as conference
tutorial presentations are usually made only by academics (i.e. this would
look great on your CV!). See
http://www.auscc.org/ for more.

Microwave for the Coursework Students.
Until now there has been no after-hours access to a microwave for the
coursework masters (MSSE and MIT) and 4th year undergraduate students, as
they do not have access to any of the kitchens in levels higher than Level
2, and the Dept did not outfit Level 2 with a microwave. Together with
the Department, MU-CSA and
contributions from various undergraduates, we have purchased a microwave for
Level 2. We wish the coursework students happy eating!

Correction - Complex Systems Group Details.

announcement about the Complex Systems Group, we incorrectly reported the
Group's email address as (csg at cs.mu.oz.au). It is actually

CSSEPG Webpage - a Wiki for the Postgrads.
Gavin Baker has had the
great idea of starting a CSSEPG Wiki, and has generously implemented one for us
on our website - we will be adding some pages to the Wiki (ie. tools, links,
etc.) in the next few hours to get things started, but go to
http://www.cs.mu.oz.au/pgrad/pgwiki/index.php to have a look! A Wiki is a
collaborative application that allows a group to create web content
together using a very simple markup language, without the content having
to undergoe review prior to its posting. You should feel free to post
things on our wiki, especially ideas, tools or resources that others might
find useful!

The Machine Learning and Data Mining Reading Group is having its first
meeting Monday May 26th from 10-11:30am, in ICT Room 3.04. Meetings are
expected to continue in the same slot fortnightly, and are primarly
targetted at staff and pgrads researching in classification, regression,
clustering and assocation rule mining (broadly speaking, ML and DM).
Although meetings will be informal, it is the aim of the group to cover
reasonably advanced results from the literature. See the group's page at

welcome to come along too! Contact Mark Ng at (markn at cs.mu.oz.au) or the CSG

Openning for New Postgraduate Seminar Coordinator.
Jun Liu will be stepping down from the position of CSSE postgraduate
seminar coordinator, having held the role since November 2001. Our sincere
thanks, Jun, for your generous service over the past two years! Along
with Jun, the CSSEPG would like to invite a CSSE research postgraduate to
volunteer for the seminar coordinator position. Please email the CSSEPG
executive at (cssepg at cs.mu.oz.au) if you are interested in volunteering. If
there are a number of people interested, we can investigate some kind of
informal election (over pizza, of course!), etc. An announcement will be made in
