Announcements

  • May, 2008: Associate Professor Rajkumar Buyya has been awarded a Distinguished Service Award by the IEEE Computer Society in recognition of services to the Society since 1998. During the last decade, Raj has been Chair of the Task Force on Cluster Computing and Chair of the Technical Committee on Scalable Computing, and founded four IEEE conferences and new community programs with global impact. The President of the IEEE Computer Society acknowledged Raj's service to the Society at a level of dedication and achievement rarely demonstrated.
  • 25 January, 2008: Associate Professor Rajkumar Buyya (Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering) has been awarded the Chris Wallace Award for Outstanding Research Contribution by the Computing Research and Education Association of Australasia (CORE) - www.core.edu.au. CORE Australasia is an association of university departments of computer science in Australia and New Zealand. It offers the Chris Wallace Award each year to an academic for research that includes a notable breakthrough or a contribution of particular significance.
  • 13 December, 2007: Associate Professor Rajkumar Buyya and Hui Li received the Best Paper Award at the 3rd IEEE International Conference on e-Science and Grid Computing for their work on model-driven simulation of grid scheduling strategies. The paper was co-authored by a visiting research student from Leiden University, The Netherlands. The award was presented on 13 December by M.V. Rajashekaran, Union Minister of State for Planning, the Government of India.
  • July, 2007: Professor Leon Sterling has commenced as the Director of eResearch at the University. This position is located within Information Services (IS) with dual reporting lines to the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor Research and IS. Professor Sterling will provide leadership and strategic advice on international, national and state e-research developments. He will work closely with the newly formed eScholarship Research Centre, taking responsibility for the development of the University's e-research strategy and the development of successful consulting and research bids to assist in building the University's capability in e-research. Collaboration across the University and with key external partners will be critical to the success of these initiatives. Professor Sterling will be co-located with the eScholarship Research Centre on level 4 of the Baillieu Library. He will maintain his strong association with the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering with 20% of his time spent on ongoing research activity and RHD student supervision.
  • May, 2007: Congratulations to Professor Ramamohanarao (Rao) Kotagiri who received the PAKDD 2007 Distinguished Contribution Award. PAKDD (Pacific-Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining) is a leading international conference in the areas of data mining and knowledge discovery. The steering committee of PAKDD decided to confer the award on Rao based on his "persistent outstanding contributions to PAKDD and eminent academic record". Rao has had a long and distinguished academic research career and a strong association with the PAKDD Conference.
  • February, 2007: Congratulations to Associate Professor Harald Sondergaard (Computer Science and Software Engineering), who has just been awarded the CORE Inaugural Teaching Award (2007) "for significant contributions to teaching and learning in the Computer Science discipline". CORE, the Computing Research and Education Association of Australasia, is an association of thirty university departments in Australia and New Zealand.
  • September 2006: In a positive sign that the tide is turning for ICT graduates and the ICT industry in general, The Minister for Information and Technology The Honourable Marsha Thompson, this afternoon, oversaw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Satyam Computer Services Ltd and The University/Department. Satyam is one of the leading IT companies in the world and one of the top four Indian IT companies, with offices worldwide and a turnover of $US 794,000,000 (at March 2005). It is currently employing more than 5,000 staff per quarter and believes that demand for IT staff will exceed supply in the next decade, unless it can secure mutually beneficial partnerships like the one it has secured with the University/Department. The new MOU will provide internship opportunities to students and expose them to real world problems in a commercial environment. Satyam has also committed to employing students from the Department/University, which their CEO believes to be in the top 20 Universities the world. The MOU will allow the University and Satyam to actively collaborate on new research projects and pave the way for a long term relationship.
  • June, 2006: The federal government has formally acknowledged the value of ICT in supporting a knowledge based society, by appointing Prof. Rao Kotagiri as a member of the Data for Scientists working party of the Prime Minister's Science Engineering Innovation Council. The Council is the Australian Government's principal source of independent advice on issues in science, engineering and innovation and relevant aspects of education and training.
  • 3 March, 2006: The Department home page has moved to http://www.csse.unimelb.edu.au/, a significant step in the migration away from the cs.mu.OZ.AU domain. The new site uses a new web content management system.

Celebrations

  • 12 September 2007: Congratulations to Linda Stern and Steven Bird, who received two of the three Faculty Teaching Awards that were presented at the Dean's Honors Ceremony last night. Steven was also the recipient of the Kelvin Medal.
  • 21 February, 2007: The Department's Teaching Excellence Awards for 2006 was shared by Tim Baldwin and Tony Wirth, with a commendation to Joey Chua.
  • 21 February, 2007: The Department's Research Excellence Award for 2006 was shared by Chris Leckie and Egemen Tanin. The award is to academics in the department for quality and productivity of research in 2006.
  • 26 September 2006: Congratulations to Shanika Karunasekera who was presented with one of the three Engineering Faculty Awards for Excellence in Teaching 2006. Shanika was also the recipient of the Kelvin Medal for excellence in Engineering education.
  • June, 2006: Congratulations to Alistair Moffat who has been appointed Associate Dean of the School of Graduate Studies with responsibilities for Academic Programs and Quality Assurance.
  • 2006 is the 50th anniversary of CSIRAC, our first computer, as well as a celebration of 50 years of computing education at the University of Melbourne.
  • 7 April, 2006: The Department's Research Excellence Award for 2005 was shared by Raj Buyya and Tim Baldwin. The award is to academics in the department for quality and productivity of research in 2005.
  • 24 February, 2006: The Departmental Teaching Excellence Awards for 2005 were awarded to Steven Bird and Lars Kulik. Commendations were awarded to James Bailey and Tim Baldwin.
  • November 2005: Congratulations to Xiaonan Ji, James Bailey and Guozhu Dong for winning the best paper award at the IEEE 2005 International Conference on Data Mining for their paper "Mining Minimal Distinguishing Subsequence Patterns with Gap Constraints"
  • September 2005: Congratulations to Chris Leckie and Michael Kirley for taking out two of the three Engineering Faculty Awards for Excellence in Teaching 2005. Chris also received the Kelvin Club's "Kelvin Medal" for excellence in engineering education.
  • August 2005: Peter Stuckey has an extensive collection of programming competitions trophies. Hence it came as no surprise when he and Maria Garcia de la Banda won the 2005 Constraint Modelling Challenge.
