IT @ Melbourne

All courses in IT at Melbourne begin with the first year Informatics subjects.

Undergraduate Courses

Computing studies at university are unlike Information Technology subjects at school. No particular computing background is expected before starting a computing degree. There are prerequisite subjects for each degree course. Please check with the latest official University publications for admissions details.

The way you learn at university is also different. There are various support schemes at the departmental, faculty, and university level; (see list below) for those unfamiliar with the subject or style of learning.

Courses in computing at the University of Melbourne are flexible.

  • If you have a number of interests you may choose the Bachelor of Science (Computer Science), which is the most flexible ways to study computing. This degree permits you to combine computing with a wide range of other disciplines. A fourth (honours) year is available as it is for the Bachelor of Computer Science.
  • A more engineering oriented degree is our new Bachelor of Science (Software Systems), which gives you hands-on experience for large and complex software systems. It provides a direct pathway into the new Master of Engineering degree.
  • Our three year Bachelor of Computer Science degree is still available for students who start in 2008. It allows you to include a high proportion of computing studies over the duration of your degree. A fourth (Honours) year is available, which prepares for postgraduate study.
  • Our Software Engineering course was the first Software Engineering course to be accredited by Engineers Australia. Students work on projects with clients from industry as part of their third and fourth year assessment and present their results to a meeting of clients, peers, staff and potential employers.

Starting in 2008

In 2008 the University introduced a landmark educational reform known as the 'Melbourne Model'. It is designed to create an outstanding and distinctive Melbourne Experience for all students. Find out more about the Melbourne Model and what it means for Engineering here.

This means that there is a variety of pathways to a career in Computer Science or Engineering offering you the flexibility to choose a course that is right for you.

See the course diagram on the Faculty of Engineering website and the Informatics website for pathways.

* Note: Bachelor of Commerce students need to enrol in a specified sequence of Engineering subjects that will lead to the professional Master of Engineering.
